2008 EHDI Conference in New Orleans

On February 25-26, New Orleans hosted the 2008 Early Hearing Detection & Intervention (EHDI)
Conference attended by over 500 participants representing all 50 states & territories and 11 international locations. The conference was cosponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Maternal and Child Health Bureau and the National Center on Hearing Assessment and Management. The EHDI conference provided participants with the opportunity to interact
with experts in the field of early hearing detection and intervention. Over 90 topical sessions presented current and practical information, the latest research and discussion of “hot topics” in the field. It was evident from browsing the agenda of topics that the focus of EHDI is now on the “I” -- INTERVENTION!
Many of the informative presentations focused on the need for appropriate and quality early intervention and reported on successful EI components across the country.

Do you know a family whose child has been recently diagnosed with a hearing loss?
If so, contact us at laagbell@bellsouth.net and let us know about them!

When a family of a newly identified youngster joins Louisiana A.G. Bell, they will be provided with their very own copy of My Baby and Me by Betsy Moog Brooks.

My Baby and Me has been written for parents of young deaf and hard of hearing children and for professionals helping these parents. Developed with the comments and guidance of many parents of children with hearing loss, it offers strategies and techniques for helping children develop spoken language skills, ideas and suggestions for language learning activities, as well as answers to questions about hearing and hearing loss.

Speech Sounds: A Guide for Parents and Professionals Speech Sounds is used as a supplement to the developmental way children who are deaf learn speech sounds through listening. The units serve as a guide to professionals for planning therapy sessions and classroom activities. Parents use the overview and the cards as a resource for active and effective home carry-over.

This is an excellent resource for both professionals and parents. It contains information, activities and resources all available for free download. At this site you will find the 6-page Introduction to Speech Sounds written by Nancy Caleffe-Schenck and Dian Baker, both certified Auditory Verbal Therapists. This introduction provides practical ideas and advice for integrating listening, speech, language, cognition and literacy into a child’s communication-learning experiences. Speech Sounds also contains individual units for 20 English consonant sounds on printable cards. Each unit provides 1) child friendly word lists for vocabulary, 2) daily routines, 3) activities, 4) games and toys, 4) songs, rhymes and fingerplays, 5) children’s books.
