Who We Are
The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Section (DHHS) is one of three special interest sections
of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and
Hard of Hearing. The other two sections are known as the Parents Section (PS) and the
International Professional Section (INPROSEC). AG Bell is a tax-exempt 501(c) non-profit
organization, headquartered in Washington, DC. The association serves parents of children
who are deaf or hard of hearing, adults who are oral deaf or hard of hearing, educators of
individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, and other interested persons in every state,
and reaches out to over 54 nations.
DHHS was formed in July 1964, in Salt Lake City, Utah. We are an active service group
of adults who are deaf or hard of hearing who choose to communicate through spoken
language and speechreading. DHHS serves to help the Bell Association carry out its mission
of encouraging the use, when appropriate, of the oral approach in educating children with
hearing loss.
In carrying out the mission, DHHS members strive to:
- Work together on a national level to coordinate the efforts of regional and local DHHS
organizations.
- Collaborate with the Parents Section and INPROSEC as well as with AG Bell state chapters
and international affiliates.
- Act on the grass-roots level to provide information and support to parents and mentor
young children.
- Socialize with peers.
