Transitioning to Part B and an Individualized Education Program (IEP)
What to expect
Services provided to children under Part C are provided until the child’s third birthday. Once the child turns three (and until the school year of the child/student’s 22nd birthday), educational services are provided under Part B of IDEA. To make the transition as seamless as possible, IDEA requires the development of a Transition Plan as part of the IFSP. Also included in IDEA are guidelines for how the transition should be managed.
The process will begin about three months before the child’s third birthday, unless the child has been determined to be eligible for services through Part C within 90 days of the child’s third birthday.
While Part C services are focused on the needs of the entire family, Part B services are focused on the needs of the child. The written document in Part B is called the Individualized Education Program (IEP). Learn more about the IEP through AG Bell’s Parent Advocacy Training (P.A.T.) program.
