SoonerStart Early Intervention Program

SoonerStart is Oklahoma's early intervention program designed to meet the needs of infants and toddlers aged birth to 36 months, with disabilities and developmental delays.  The program is free and qualification is based on the child's disability and severity of the delay(s).  Services are provided in the home and depending on the need, may include diagnosis and evaluation, occupational, physical and speech- language therapy, certain medical services, case management and social work.  Eligibility is not based on income, but on the child's developmental status. There are SoonerStart offices in all areas of the state. For a list of those offices CONTACT OASIS at 1-800426-2747 OR For more information go to the SoonerStart web page at http://www.health.state.ok.us/chds/cherokee/sooner.html. Children who do not pass their initial newborn hearing screening can receive information regarding follow-up diagnostic assessments as well as receive evaluations and referrals for services in the area of the parents’ chosen communication methodology.

The mission of the Hearts for Hearing Foundation is to provide resources for children in Oklahoma who are deaf or hard of hearing so that they can learn to listen and talk.  We exist because hearing technology and intervention for a child with hearing loss are limited and expensive.  The Hearts for Hearing Foundation provides initial amplification and financial assistance for audiology, habilitation, and educational services for children with significant bilateral hearing loss pursuing a spoken language option.

What is this program?
This program, Fire Safety Solutions for People with Disabilities, is designed to distribute and install free smoke alarms, as well as provide Fire Safety messages to Oklahomans with disabilities. Fire Protection Publications and Oklahoma ABLE Tech, both at Oklahoma State University, have created a partnership to provide specific fire safety messages to people who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind/low vision, or mobility impaired.

Any person with a hearing loss or parent on behalf of a child with hearing loss can apply for this free equipment.  To access this information go to http://www.ok.gov/abletech/. In the left side of the page see "Fire Safety". Click on this and you will have all the information needed to apply. The only extra documentation is a letter stating that the person has a hearing loss.  Please contact your service provider for this information. The program provides free installation and consultation on fire escape plans
