AG Bell Academy Appoints Kathryn Wilson and Rollen Cooper to its Board of Directors
Washington, D.C. – October 17, 2013 – The AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language announces the appointment of Kathryn Wilson, M.A., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT, and Rollen Cooper, M.S., LSLS Cert. AVEd, to its board of directors for the 2013-2015 term, beginning on September 1, 2013.
Kathryn Wilson is a speech-language pathologist, teacher of the deaf and a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist (LSLS®), with more than 30 years of experience as an educator, therapist and consultant in a variety of settings, including public school, private practice, home-based and clinical.
She is assistant clinical professor and director of FIRST YEARS at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. The FIRST YEARS Certificate in Auditory Learning for Young Children with Hearing Loss is a certificate program committed to enhancing the knowledge and skills of professionals practicing in the fields of deaf education, speech-language pathology, audiology and early intervention.
Wilson is a former member of the board of directors for Auditory-Verbal International, Inc., and served as co-chair of its Professional Education Committee. Prior to her current roles at UNC Chapel Hill, she was the director of the Resource Support Program in the Office of Education Services for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Wilson is the author and co-author of four articles in 101 Frequently Asked Questions About Auditory-Verbal Practice.

Rollen Cooper earned his master’s degree in Speech and Hearing Science and is a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist. He has worked with children with hearing loss and their families for 19 years. Cooper is the Early Intervention coordinator at Child’s Voice School in Wood Dale, Ill., just outside of Chicago, where he coordinates the home-based and center-based services. Cooper also provides home-based aural habilitation services to infants and toddlers and their families.
Prior to joining Child's Voice School, Cooper taught in the elementary department at Central Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis, Mo. He joined the staff at Child’s Voice in 1996 and taught in the preschool program for over 10 years. In 2008, Cooper became the lead teacher for the School Program. In this role, he mentored new teachers, provided individual educational services to students, served as a consultant to colleagues, offered in-services to staff and parents on literacy and language development, and collaborated with school district representatives. He also created a study group program that prepared staff members for the LSLS exam. In June 2013, he became the Early Intervention coordinator at the school.
In 2011-2012, Cooper served on the expert panel for Project ASPIRE (Achieving Superior Parental Involvement for Rehabilitative Excellence), a parent education program for economically disadvantaged children through the University of Chicago. He is the co-author of two articles in 101 Frequently Asked Questions About Auditory-Verbal Practice.
