Hearing Aids Edit

A hearing aid is an electronic, battery-operated device that amplifies sound to improve listening comprehension. It collects sounds from the environment via a microphone, amplifies those sounds and then directs the amplified signal into the user's ear through a tiny speaker.

The main decisions to make when selecting hearing aids are: style, electronic circuitry, features and whether to use monaural (one ear) versus binaural (two ears) hearing aids. Using hearing aids in both ears generally provides superior benefit compared to a monaural hearing aid and is strongly recommended for children who are learning to listen and talk. Each of these decisions is independent of the other: the style of a hearing aid does not typically indicate the sophistication of the electronic components. Related Articles
