Auditory-Verbal Method Edit

The Auditory-Verbal method is similar to the auditory/oral approach in that there is a strong emphasis on maximizing a child’s residual hearing and his ability to use it. Based on evidence that even children with minimal hearing can be taught spoken language through learning to listen, the Auditory-Verbal method has a set of guiding principles that are used by professionals and parents who follow the method.

There are nearly 300 certified Auditory-Verbal Therapists worldwide. These professionals, who hold degrees and licensure in speech-language pathology, audiology and/or education, provide individual therapy to a child and his or her caregiver(s).

A parent-professional partnership is developed—where the professional teaches the parent how to teach their child how to communicate using spoken language. In turn, the parent informs the professional of the child’s progress and use of communication outside of regular therapy sessions, so that new goals can be developed and therapy sessions can be maximized.

The primary goal of the parent-professional partnership is to provide adequate support of the child’s development and integration of listening and spoken language into everyday life. The Auditory-Verbal approach also supports a child's participation in regular classroom and living environments as soon as possible.
